Required Documentation
To open a personal bank account, you will generally need:
A valid passport
Proof of address
Tourist card or FM3 issued upon entry into Mexico
Three local references
An initial deposit of approximately $3,000 MXN
Recommended Bank
Bancomer (BBVA) is widely considered one of the best options for foreigners opening a peso account in Mexico.
The bank offers bilingual service through its Preferential Client Section and has extensive experience working with foreign property owners and long-term visitors.
Account Benefits
Bancomer accounts allow clients to:
Pay utility bills online
Issue checks in Mexican pesos
Set up recurring monthly payments
Manage balances and transfers remotely while abroad
Clients are issued a Gold Card, which provides priority service at branches and significantly reduces waiting times.
Additional Notes
It is recommended to schedule an appointment in advance, as bank branches are often busy.
To avoid monthly maintenance fees, the bank requires a minimum balance of $3,000 MXN.
