Do You Need Mexican Residency to Buy or Live in Mexico?

Updated: Jan 24

No — Mexican residency is not required to buy property in Mexico. Foreigners can legally purchase real estate without being residents.

However, residency does matter if you plan to live in Mexico long-term:

  • If you stay up to 6 months, a tourist permit is enough.

  • If you plan to stay more than 6 months, you will need Temporary or Permanent Residency.

Having residency can also make certain processes easier, such as opening bank accounts, registering for tax purposes, and managing utilities — but it is not a requirement for ownership.

In short:

  • Buy property: residency not required

  • Live long-term: residency required
