How Do I Obtain an RFC Tax Number in Mexico?

Updated: Jan 24

An RFC (Registro Federal de Contribuyentes) is Mexico’s official tax ID, required for activities like buying or selling property, opening certain bank accounts, or registering as a taxpayer.

How to get it:

  • Online:You can apply through Mexico’s tax authority (SAT) website if you meet the requirements.

  • In person:Visit a local SAT office (for example, in Puerto Vallarta). This is often the fastest option, especially for real estate transactions.

What you’ll need:

  • Valid passport

  • Immigration card (temporary or permanent resident)

  • Proof of address (Mexico or abroad)

If you don’t already have an RFC, a generic foreigner RFC can be issued for the property closing. Many buyers later upgrade it to a full RFC once registered with SAT.

Getting your RFC in advance helps keep the closing process smooth and avoids delays.
